Fahrenheit 451: Literary Devices

“We need not to be let alone. We need to be really bothered once in a while. How long is it since you were really bothered? About something important, about something real?”
― Ray BradburyFahrenheit 451

  • Allusion: "First fireman: Benjamin Franklin", Bradbury makes an alussion of Franklin because he was consider one of the first firemans that burned books in America.

  • Metaphor: "... and his hands were the hands of some amazing conductor playing all the symphonies of blazing and burning..." By this metaphor, Montag shows that he is proud of his jod thats why he compares himself to a fire conductor.

  • Personification: "...To shove a marshmallow on a stick in the furnace while the pigeon-winged books died on the porch..." Is a personification of a book saying that it has wings just like the birds connecting him just like it could be a dying pigeon, this means the regret of Montags work as a fireman.

  • Simile: "Her face was like a snow-covered island..." In the books is shown what Montag thinks about his wife so this means that she is a isolated person with cold personalitie just like an island full of snow.

Fahrenheit 451: Motifs

“The good writers touch life often. The mediocre ones run a quick hand over her. The bad ones rape her and leave her for the flies.”
― Ray BradburyFahrenheit 451

  • Imagery: In the book the imagery of nature and animals is really big because its describe that nature is shown as the innocence and how humans ignores the nature while being obsessed with technology.

Fahrenheit 451: Themes

“Stuff your eyes with wonder, he said, live as if you'd drop dead in ten seconds. See the world. It's more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories.”
― Ray BradburyFahrenheit 451

  • Censorship: Through the book there is a clear reference of censorship that is not only about the books but also censorship to knowledge and that is something that Radbury wanted to make clear for the reader. First of all he states that books were actually boring for people so thats why they started burning them but he also says that books produce envy and thats why knowledge creates danger between the people.

  • Knowledge/Ignorance:  As said before these two themes are very important to the evolution of the book, so the fireman’s duty is to destroy knowledge and promote ignorance in order to equalize the population and promote sameness.

Fahrenheit 451: Symbols

“You're not like the others. I've seen a few; I know. When I talk, you look at me. When I said something about the moon, you looked at the moon, last night. The others would never do that. The others would walk off and leave me talking. Or threaten me. No one has time any more for anyone else. You're one of the few who put up with me. That's why I think it's so strange you're a fireman, it just doesn't seem right for you, somehow.”

― Ray BradburyFahrenheit 451

  • Blood: Through the book the blood appears as "symbol of a human beings repressed soul or primal, instinctive self." The main character feels that his ideas and revolutionary thoughts are circulating through the blood, on the other hand for other characters the blood means somthing different, for example Montags (the main character) wife that  is refered as "her poisoned, replaceable blood signifies the empty lifelessness of Mildred and the countless others like her."
  • The Hearth and the Salamander: the hearth is a symbol of home so is the fire that heats up the home and the salamander because of ancient beliefs that it lives in fire and is unaffected by flames.
  • The Sieve and the Sand: the sand is a symbol of the tangible truth Montag seeks, and the sieve the human mind seeking a truth that remains elusive and, the metaphor suggests, impossible to grasp in any permanent way.

  • The Phoenix: the symbol of the phoenix that burns itself up and then rises out of its ashes over and over again means the collective rebirth of humankind but also to Montag’s spiritual resurrection.

  • Mirrors: The mirrors in the book refers as a way of self-understanding and seeing their own-selfs clearly showing who we truly are.
